7th Man AwardI wrote an essay for the 2003 NHL Seventh Man competition.  The web site called for 250 words.  My letter came in at just under 500 words - and I was succinct!  A more complete version would have been 3000 words plus.  Anyway, I am including the 500 word version and a shorter 250 word version (chopped down from 500 words) that I actually submitted to be within contest rules below.

500 Word Version

As the Dallas Stars 7th Man, I reach out to my coworkers, friends and community with enthusiasm and information about the most enjoyable sports experience available on this planet (my wife deserves a honorable mention as the woman that allows her husband to spend money on Stars gear). To succinctly state the depths of my passion is unfair – I trust you to feel the emotion while reading my words.

Proof of my fan loyalty and excitement for the Dallas Stars begins at work where my assigned space bears little resemblance to a standard cubicle space. Instead, my cube swims in a sea of Dallas Stars green, gold and black. Schedules, logos, hats, posters, calendars, coloring sheets (yes, you read that right – coloring sheets which I made myself), and a Dallas Stars leather jacket. Plus, every single game day, I wear a Dallas Stars Polo-style shirt to show my support.

My support continues at my house where an entire bedroom is dedicated to the Dallas Stars and is known as “The Stars Room”. In this room reside countless memorabilia articles including a Dallas Stars lamp, collectible cards, blankets, hats, figurines and much more.

And, bridging the gap between the Stars Room and my Stars Cube is my Stars Car. I have a Dallas Stars Black Camaro tastefully decorated with a large logo on the rear window, 2 small logos on the side windows, a Dallas Stars front license plate, a rear license plate frame, and (the finishing touch) a personalized Dallas Stars license plate issued by the State of Texas that says simply and proudly, “D STARS”.

But, besides cold facts, I testify to my pure love of the game. I readily admit that hockey on TV was un-watchable to me 10 years ago. But then, the Stars came to Dallas and I went to my first game. Excitement grabbed me immediately – the bone-jarring hits up against the boards, the thrill of a breakaway, the shout of “He shoots – he scores!”, and even yelling “Stars” during the national anthem (I shout it out during non-Stars events, too) – the passion never left. It builds continuously day by day into a frenzy fully realized each post-season. The off-season are the most difficult months of the year - I survive on old tapes of past games - but for every post season of inaction follows the new hope of a new season and a new push to bring home Stanley’s Glory.

My hockey colors run deep and they are green, gold and black. I don’t have to prove it – I live it!

I encourage you to check out pictures of my Dallas Stars car at http://www.taitlifto.net/DallasStars.html.

Thank you,
Seventh Fan (Tait Lifto)
